The deaths of George Floyd and Belly Mujinga have urged many in London to take to the streets and voice their frustration.

Many in the UK, especially young black men, feel unfairly targeted by the police, judicial and prison systems. In light of these deaths and the oppression felt by black people on both a physical and psychological level, people of all ages and experiences came to add their voice to the chorus of protest.

Cries of ‘No justice, no peace’ and ‘Say his name ... George Floyd’ echoed in the crowd. While some voiced anger and pain directly to nearby police officers, most remained peaceful and caring towards one another. Chatter among the groups was full of insightful debate and passionate storytelling.

Ideology and sociology were hot topics, socialism v capitalism as an ever-present conflict. Older people shared their knowledge, retelling memories of marches in support of Stephen Lawrence. Youngsters exchanging notes that read ‘Know your rights’.

Men, women and children from various backgrounds became one, free of fear and determined to be heard.

There is nothing I’ve experienced that comes close to the energy a group of people can conjure up when they unite. It is infectious even to those passing by.

Buses and cars hooted their horns in support of the ensemble as we marched side by side to the US embassy. Here, a knee and moment of silence was observed in recognition of those who have lost their lives to police brutality and oppression.
